Description: This presentation reviews the HUNT study, which prospectively examined the association between TSH levels and coronary heart disease in a large Norwegian population with no known thyroid or cardiovascular disease or diabetes at baseline.

Title: Ochs N, et al. Meta-Analysis: Subclinical Thyroid Dysfunction and the Risk for Coronary Heart Disease and Mortality. Ann Intern Med. 2008;148:832-845.

Description: These slides describe the findings of a meta-analysis conducted by Ochs et al of 10 studies that analyzed the relationship between subclinical thyroid dysfunction (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism) and coronary heart disease.

Title: Castro-Gago M, et al. Evolution of Subclinical Hypothyroidism in Children Treated With Antiepileptic Drugs. Pediatr Neuro. 2007;37:426-430.

Description: Investigators studied the effects of 3 antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) – carbamazepine, valproic acid, and phenobarbital – on thyroid health in 57 children, compared with 148 age- and sex-matched controls. They also measured thyroid parameters 3 months after each drug was discontinued and drew conclusions about the monitoring of thyroid function in children receiving these medications.
