Description: This slide set describes Endocrine Society Clinical Practice guidelines for the management of women with thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism) during pregnancy, including information on drug therapy and iodine nutrition levels.

Title: McClain MR, et al. Thyroid-Related Measurements in Women With Hypothyroidism During First- and Second- Trimester of Pregnancy. Am J Obstet Gynecol. 2008;199:129.e1-129.e6.

Description: A review of a study that measured thyroid-related levels in pregnant women with hypothyroidism to determine if management of such women is in line with recently published clinical guidelines. It describes the findings of elevated TSH levels in many women in the study and the need for clinicians to monitor thyroid hormone levels during the first and second trimesters of pregnancy.

Title: Hampl R, et al. Short-Term Effect of Soy Consumption on Thyroid Hormone Levels. Endocr Regul. 2008;42:53-61.

Description: Because soy products contain isoflavones – natural plant hormones – there is some concern that eating soy may have a negative effect on thyroid hormone, especially in patients taking thyroid hormone. Hampl et al investigated this question by measuring the effect of soy consumption on thyroid function in healthy adults, as described in these slides.
