    Adult primary hypothyroidism is caused most frequently by chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto thyroiditis) and is present in 5-10% of the adult US population. Women older than 40 years of age and elderly individuals of both sexes are affected most frequently, although it does occur in individuals of all ages.
